#whatstheplan – Street Performance

September 2015

The Coloured Cube curated an exhibition for the JDA with a concept that encouraged public debate about what is happening in Joburg City Development: #whatstheplan.  At the preview Mariapaola and Thandi O’Hagan worked with Joburg Photowalkers & Jeppe Photo Club (these two groups hung out together and took awesome pics of the City, guided by youth from Jeppestown), and Quincy from One Love Skate Expo (40 skateboarders handed out #whatstheplan stickies for people to write what they wanted to see developing in the City – the awesome thing is that skateboarders are not allowed on Jozi streets, and here they are promoting a City exhibition).

Preview day felt like the way our City should be; streets full of kids, skateboarders, tuk-tuks, and cars taking lowest priority; photographic collaborations on Jeppestown streets between old and young, sharing the unique resources of each individual; poetry writing; violin playing; and people just hanging out, being comfortable together.

The Coloured Cube asked Sticky Situations and Platinum Sketch to assist with creating a street poetry vibe out front of the exhibition space for the official opening of #whatstheplan;  poets, performers and musicians choreographed a street performance about our Jozi City streets.
